I love a good trend as much as anyone. In jewelry, trends can be fun, inspiring, and sometimes even useful. They can push design forward and introduce people to new shapes, settings, and styling ideas they never considered before.
But after more than 20 years in the diamond industry, I’ve learned something that never changes.
Trends don’t replace training.

Trends Are Loud, Fundamentals Are Quiet
A trend is designed to grab attention. It’s supposed to be simple, catchy, and easy to repeat. “This cut is in.” “That setting is outdated.” “This is the only diamond shape that matters right now.”
Training is the opposite. Training is slow. It’s learning why one diamond performs differently than another, even when they look similar on paper. It’s understanding how proportions, light return, clarity characteristics, fluorescence, and craftsmanship all work together.

What Training Looks Like In The Real World
Here’s what I focus on when I’m evaluating diamonds and building custom pieces:
- Cut quality and light performance, because sparkle is not a trend. It’s physics.
- Diamond selection beyond the certificate, because two stones with the same grades can look completely different in real life.
- Setting and structural integrity, because a ring has to hold up for decades, not just look good in photos.
- Long-term wearability, because comfort, balance, and practical design matter more than people realize.
- Value and liquidity, especially for larger stones and investment-level pieces.
If you follow trends without understanding these fundamentals, you can end up with something that photographs well but disappoints in daily wear, or worse, something that costs far more than it should for the quality you’re actually getting.
Trends Shift Fast, Craftsmanship Doesn’t
One year it’s all about ovals. Then it’s elongated cushions. Then it’s toi et moi rings. Then it’s ultra-thin bands that look great online but can be risky if they’re not engineered correctly.
