The Hidden World of Fancy Color Diamonds: Stories From a Third-Generation Jeweler
I grew up around fancy color diamonds long before most people even knew what they were. Back then, they weren’t on Instagram, they weren’t on every jewelry website, and they definitely weren’t mainstream. Only a small circle of dealers and collectors really understood their beauty. I was lucky enough to be raised in that world.
Some of my earliest memories in the Diamond District involve watching my father and grandfather handle stones with a kind of respect that stuck with me. They didn’t rush. They didn’t flip the stones around like objects. They held them gently, studied them in soft light, and let the color speak. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was being trained without even knowing it.
Most people don’t realize that fancy color diamonds used to be a little mysterious. Before the modern grading system, dealers relied almost completely on their eyes. If a stone had a rich, pure yellow, they’d call it “canary,” but even that word meant something different depending on who said it. Everyone had their own scale, their own vocabulary, their own way of reading a stone. There was no single language for color.
I’ll never forget something that happened when I was a student at the Gemological Institute of America. We were learning how to grade color using comparison cards, controlled lighting, and an entire setup designed to standardize the process. I was taking it seriously, the way any student would. But at one point, I raised my hand and said to the instructor, “My father doesn’t use any of these tools. He doesn’t need them.” The professor looked at me and said, “You’re right. After enough years, some people develop an eye for color that’s stronger than any instrument.” That moment hit me hard. It was mind-blowing because even the instructor — someone teaching color grading at the highest level — was relying on tools while the people in my family could glance at a stone and call the quality almost instantly. That’s when I realized the depth of what I had inherited.
As I got older and started working in the business myself, I began to understand why fancy colors create such strong reactions. These stones aren’t just diamonds with color. They’re personalities. They have presence. When you see a strong colored diamond, you don’t forget it. It stays in your mind the way a powerful piece of art stays with you.
One of the first stones that really taught me something was a vivid-level yellow my father showed me when I was young. I didn’t know the terminology yet, but I remember feeling like I was looking at something rare. The color felt alive. It was glowing in a way I couldn’t explain. That moment taught me something no book, no lab, and no certificate could ever teach: saturation is a feeling, not just a measurement.
Years later, when I began helping clients build their collections, I realized how valuable that early training was. Fancy color diamonds don’t behave like white diamonds. Two stones with the same grade can look completely different. One can have that rich, electric presence. The other can feel quiet or muted. You have to know what you’re looking for.
I’ve met collectors who immediately recognize that magic when they see it. And I’ve met people who discover it for the first time in my showroom. I love both experiences. I enjoy watching someone’s eyes light up when they finally understand the difference between a basic fancy color and a truly exceptional one.
And then there are the people who think they can buy a fancy color diamond by comparing certificates alone. I’ve seen this too many times. Someone will walk in with a stack of papers, ready to make an investment based on numbers and charts. But fancy colors don’t work like that. You can’t spreadsheet your way into a great stone. You have to see it, feel it, connect with it. The best stones are the ones that speak to you.
Over the years, I’ve been blessed to guide clients through some incredible purchases. People come to me from all over the world because they want someone they can trust — someone who understands fancy colors the way my family has for generations. When I help someone find the right diamond, I don’t just hand them a stone. I hand them everything I’ve learned growing up in this business.
Fancy color diamonds are a world within a world. A world of nuance, history, instinct, and beauty. And when you understand them the right way, they become one of the most meaningful purchases you can ever make.
If you ever want to explore this world, I’ll be here to guide you.
