How to Choose a Jeweler You Can Trust When the Diamond Truly Matters

By Mike Nekta, New York

Choosing a jeweler isn’t like choosing a restaurant or buying a pair of shoes. When you’re spending real money on a diamond, especially a fancy color or a high-quality engagement ring, you’re choosing someone who will shape one of the most meaningful purchases of your life. You’re choosing someone to guide you, protect you, and make sure the piece you’re buying represents the story you want to tell.

People forget this until the pressure hits them. I see it all the time. Someone walks into my office or schedules a call and within minutes, their entire tone shifts. They realize very quickly that this isn’t something you want to get wrong. Not for yourself, not for the person you love, and definitely not when you’re investing in something meant to last across generations.

A few years ago, a client of mine really drove this point home. He’s a highly successful dentist and gum surgeon. Extremely intelligent, detail-oriented, and one of the most thoughtful clients I’ve ever worked with. He took this purchase seriously the way he takes his work seriously. He wasn’t bargain hunting and he wasn’t looking for shortcuts. He wanted something exceptional.

We spent time selecting the right stone, the right setting, the right proportions. Everything had to feel perfect for the woman he was proposing to. When we finished, he told me he was planning a very special trip to Chile to propose. A week later, I received a video from him. He was standing in the mountains, wind blowing, holding the ring we created together. He had flown there on a private jet. I don’t know if it was his or not, and honestly, it doesn’t matter. What mattered was the intention. The effort. The meaning behind the moment. That’s the kind of client I love working with. People who are committed to high-quality pieces and meaningful experiences, not people trying to save a few dollars and cut corners.

Moments like that remind me why the right clients naturally find their way to me. I’m not sitting here choosing people one by one. It’s the level of craftsmanship, detail, and intention in my work that does the filtering on its own. The type of stones I source, the way I build my pieces, and the standards I hold myself to tend to attract people who appreciate quality and take the process seriously. In a way, the service and the product themselves do the choosing. When someone values the journey, I match that energy completely.

That experience reminded me why choosing the right jeweler is so important. When the moment is real, when the story matters, when the ring represents your life and your values, you want to work with someone who cares as much as you do. You want to work with someone who understands quality the way a musician understands music or the way a surgeon understands precision.

Here are a few things I believe you should look for when choosing a jeweler you can trust:

First, experience. Not the kind you get from scrolling online, but the kind you get from years of handling stones, studying color, and selecting diamonds that don’t just match the paper but rise above it.

Second, transparency. You want someone who tells you the truth, even when the truth might push you toward a different stone or a different idea. A real jeweler protects your interests before protecting the sale.

Third, taste. This is something people don’t talk about enough. A good jeweler has good taste. They understand proportions, color, brightness, and design. They understand what looks elegant, what looks timeless, and what will still look good twenty years from now.

Fourth, intention. You want to work with someone who sees your purchase as something meaningful, not transactional. Someone who actually loves the craft.

The right jeweler changes everything. They remove the doubt. They remove the fear of making a mistake. They show you stones you would never have found on your own. They give you confidence because they have confidence earned over decades.

I always tell people this: the person you work with is just as important as the diamond you choose. A great jeweler elevates everything. A poor one makes everything more stressful.

When you’re ready to purchase a diamond that truly matters, whether it’s a fancy color, an engagement ring, or an heirloom piece, work with someone who understands the journey. Someone who respects the meaning behind the purchase. Someone who sees the beauty in the stone before you even hold it.

I rarely write reviews but working with Mike has been a true pleasure! My fiancé and I flew from Austin to meet with him - and we left with the most exquisite engagement ring! His craftsmanship is impeccable and his true passion for what he does is clearly apparent…not to mention how wonderful his client service is! He sized the ring on the spot and made sure that all the documentation (and the ring) made it safely to Texas. We are now having him create the wedding band of my dreams. If you are looking for exceptional artistry, a lovely experience and a collaborative relationship to design your jewelry - look no further than Mike Nekta!

I had a fantastic experience with Mike who helped us choose our diamond. He was informative, passionate, and genuinely wanted us to be happy with our decision. His kindness and positive attitude made the process enjoyable. We don’t live in his area so he went above and beyond by texting us to keep us informed of the whole creation process. Highly recommend him!

I just got my engagement ring through Mike Nekta and I can’t even begin to say how pleased I am! The entire experience has been wonderful from start to finish. First, the uniqueness and quality of the piece itself is outstanding. The pricing was surprisingly good considering all the factors involved. But most especially, Mike’s personal level of interest in pleasing us as his clients- you rarely find that level of personal service anymore! He cared about making my dream come true. He bent over backwards to make my dream ring possible for me! He clearly deals with elites who spend far more but it didn’t matter to him, he cared just as much about my purchase. I really appreciated that. I definitely plan to shop with Mike again!

Mike is the best! I told him exactly the type of Diamond I wanted for my solitaire engagement ring and he helped my fiancé find the best diamond to not only fit his budget but one I would fall in love with! He really listens to what you like and want and really does exceed to help fit those desires in a ring. Definitely will be coming back to him for our wedding bands and all future jewelry purchases!
