Pink Diamond Price Guide
By Mike Nekta
25 Years in the NYC Diamond District
“When it comes to Pink Diamonds, I’ve seen what most jewelers only read about. I compare them in natural light, side-by-side, so my clients never overpay.”
Why Clients Trust Me With Pink Diamonds
Pink Diamonds are a different universe—rarer, more emotional, more complex, and more expensive than almost anything in the diamond world. For 25 years, I’ve specialized in natural fancy colors, and pinks are among the rarest stones I work with.
I don’t rely on marketing stories or stock photos. I evaluate every pink diamond in natural daylight, compare saturation, hue modifiers, and fluorescence, and tell buyers the truth… even when it’s not convenient.
I’ve handled everything from soft Fancy Light Pinks to deep, electric Fancy Vivid Pink diamonds that stop people mid-sentence. And yes—many jewelers have never seen a true Vivid Pink in person. I see them regularly because collectors and private buyers come to me first.
This guide is the same advice I give to investors, collectors, and newly engaged couples who trust me with their most important purchases.
What Determines Pink Diamond Value?
Pink diamonds are priced differently—and far more aggressively—than yellow diamonds. Four main factors determine their value:
1. Color Intensity (The #1 Price Driver)
GIA grades pink diamonds as:
- Faint Pink
- Very Light Pink
- Light Pink
- Fancy Pink
- Fancy Intense Pink
- Fancy Vivid Pink
- Fancy Deep Pink / Fancy Deep Purplish Pink
In simple terms:
The stronger the pink → the rarer the diamond → the higher the price.
Mike Nekta’s Note: “Pink diamonds don’t follow standard logic. A small Vivid Pink can be worth more than a larger Fancy Pink. Color dominates everything.”
2. Origin — Especially Argyle (Major Price Impact)
Not all pink diamonds are created equal.
- Argyle Pinks (closed mine; Australia)
→ Premium of 30%–300% depending on color
→ Always more collectible
→ Prices are rising every year - Non-Argyle Pinks (Russia, Africa, Brazil)
→ Still rare
→ Still valuable
→ But not the same collector prestige
Argyle stones come with separate origin documentation. If someone claims “Argyle Pink” without a certificate—it’s not Argyle.
3. Diamond Shape (How the Pink Reads in Real Life)
Best Shapes for Pinks (maximum saturation)
- Radiant Cut — amplifies color dramatically
- Cushion Cut — soft, romantic, strong color retention
- Pear Shape — tip intensifies color
- Oval — often appears more saturated than expected
More Difficult Shapes
- Emerald & Asscher — reveal everything; only strong colors look good
- Princess — decent color but less fire
- Round — tends to wash out pastels
Mike Nekta’s Note: “Shape can make the same stone look two intensities darker—or lighter.”
4. Modifiers (Secondary Hues)
Pink diamonds often have secondary tones:
- Purplish Pink (highly desirable)
- Brownish Pink (more affordable)
- Orangey Pink (rare and stunning)
The purest pinks demand the highest prices.
5. Carat Weight (Every Fraction Matters)
Pink diamonds jump in price dramatically at:
- 0.30 ct
- 0.50 ct
- 1.00 ct
- 1.50 ct
- 2.00+ ct (extremely rare)
Even a 0.20 ct size increase can double the price.
6. Clarity (Important but Secondary)
Clarity matters—but pink diamonds are graded more gently because inclusions are common.
Color > Clarity
A Fancy Vivid Pink SI2 can be more expensive than a Fancy Pink VS1.

White Diamond Halo

Mike Nekta’s Note: “A perfectly chosen setting can make a pink diamond look one full intensity grade stronger.
Natural vs Treated Pink Diamonds
Online buyers get targeted with treated stones more than anyone.
-
Natural Pink Diamonds
- Rare
- Appreciating yearly
- Collector-approved
- Investment-grade
- Limited supply (Argyle gone forever)
-
Treated (Irradiated / HPHT) Pinks
- Artificial color
- Not investment-grade
- Should cost 80–90% less than natural
Mike Nekta’s Warning: “If someone offers you a vivid pink for the price of a faint—trust me, it’s treated. No exceptions.”
Mike Nekta's Real Online Buying Advice
These are the exact words I tell clients in my showroom:
“Always compare pinks in daylight.”
Store lights exaggerate saturation.
“Don’t buy based on photos alone.”
Angles, lenses, and editing distort color.
“If I wouldn’t put the stone in my own collection, I won’t recommend it to you.” That’s the rule I live by.

Final Message From Me
Radiant and Cushion cuts both offer incredible beauty in Fancy Yellow Diamonds but they speak different languages.
Radiants shout. Cushions whisper. Both are extraordinary.
If you want an honest expert who has handled thousands of these stones and someone who will protect you like family, I’m here for you every step of the way.
