Why Serious Diamond Buyers Should Consider Shopping During the Week

A Third-Generation Diamond Dealer's Perspective from New York City's Diamond District

By Mike Nekta

There is one diamond buying mistake I see busy professionals make over and over again.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Business owners.

Executives.

Entrepreneurs

They all have one thing in common.

Their weekdays are packed, so when it’s finally time to buy an engagement ring or a significant diamond, they naturally choose Saturday.

On the surface, that seems like the logical decision.

But after spending more than 25 years working inside New York City’s Diamond District, I’ve noticed something that most buyers never consider.

The day you shop can influence who you have access to.

And who you have access to can make a tremendous difference in the diamond you ultimately buy.

What I Call “The Saturday Trap”

Let me be clear from the beginning.

There are excellent retail jewelry stores that are open on Saturdays. Many are knowledgeable, reputable businesses that genuinely care about their customers.

This article is not meant to criticize them.

Instead, I want to explain something many first-time buyers simply don’t know.

Much of New York City’s traditional diamond trade operates during the business week.

That’s when many diamond dealers are buying inventory, meeting with suppliers, evaluating stones, comparing diamonds for clients, working with manufacturers, and sourcing diamonds that aren’t sitting in a showcase.

If your only opportunity to shop is Saturday, you may be limiting yourself to a different segment of the market than you would have access to during the week.

For a purchase that may cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, that’s worth understanding before you begin shopping.

A Client Who Spent a Week Researching… and Still Lost Value

One client has stayed with me for years because it perfectly illustrates this point.

He contacted me looking for a Fancy Intense Yellow diamond.

Over the next several days we texted constantly.

We FaceTimed.

I showed him multiple diamonds.

We compared color.

We discussed saturation.

We talked about shape.

We examined why two diamonds with similar grading reports could have dramatically different appearances.

Little by little, we narrowed everything down until we found an exceptional Fancy Intense Yellow diamond that fit his budget beautifully.

Then his schedule got in the way.

He assumed he could stop by on Saturday.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t available that weekend.

Instead of scheduling a weekday appointment, he decided to purchase a diamond from a retail jewelry store in the Diamond District.

Later, he came back to show me what he had purchased.

At first glance, many people would have thought the two diamonds were virtually identical.

The price was similar.

The carat weight was similar.

Both were certified Fancy Yellow diamonds.

But when I examined them professionally, the difference was immediately obvious.

The richness.

The intensity.

The life.

The visual impact.

Everything we had spent nearly a week searching for was missing.

In my professional opinion, he paid approximately the same amount of money for a diamond that I believed had more than $10,000 less value because of its overall color quality and appearance.

The part that disappointed me wasn’t that he bought from someone else.

Competition is healthy.

The disappointing part was that he had already learned exactly what to look for.

He simply never gave himself the chance to compare the diamonds side by side before making his final decision.

Why Two Diamonds Can Cost the Same and Look Completely Different

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I encounter.

Many buyers assume that if two diamonds have similar GIA grading reports and similar carat weights, they’re basically the same.

That simply isn’t true.

Especially when you’re buying fancy colored diamonds.

A grading report is incredibly valuable.

But it cannot fully communicate:

  • The richness of the color.
  • How evenly the color is distributed.
  • How the diamond performs under different lighting.
  • The visual personality of the stone.
  • The immediate “wow” factor your eyes notice in seconds.

Those differences become obvious only when you compare multiple diamonds side by side.

That’s exactly what experienced diamond professionals do every day.

What My Week Actually Looks Like

Many people picture a diamond dealer standing behind a display case waiting for customers.

That isn’t my week.

A typical weekday may include:

  • Examining newly available diamonds.
  • Comparing several Fancy Yellow diamonds for one client.
  • Rejecting diamonds that don’t meet my standards.
  • Meeting with suppliers.
  • Reviewing craftsmanship under magnification.
  • Working with manufacturers on custom engagement rings.
  • Matching diamonds for earrings.
  • Helping clients compare stones that look identical on paper but completely different in person.

That behind-the-scenes work is what allows me to show clients carefully selected options instead of simply selling whatever happens to be sitting in inventory.

Why Weekday Appointments Can Be Different

Scheduling a weekday appointment doesn’t guarantee you’ll save money.

Every purchase is different.

Every diamond is different.

Every business operates differently.

However, meeting directly with someone who actively participates in the diamond market throughout the business week may provide advantages such as:

  • Access to a broader network of diamonds.
  • More opportunities to source specific stones.
  • Better side-by-side comparisons.
  • Greater customization.
  • A deeper understanding of the differences between diamonds.
  • The ability to evaluate several options before making a final decision.

When you’re making a significant purchase, more information usually leads to better decisions.

My Advice Before Buying Any Diamond

Whether you purchase from me or someone else, here’s my advice.

If you’re planning to spend thousands—or even six figures—on a diamond, don’t let your calendar make the decision for you.

If possible:

Take a few hours off during the week.

Schedule an appointment.

Compare multiple diamonds.

Ask difficult questions.

Look at several stones under different lighting conditions.

You’ll likely learn more in one focused appointment than you will after weeks of online research.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Diamond District open on Saturdays?

Yes. Some businesses are open on Saturdays, while others are not. Hours vary by company, and many traditional trade businesses operate primarily during the business week.

Is it better to buy a diamond during the week?

Not necessarily—but shopping during the week may give you access to a wider range of professionals, sourcing opportunities, and appointment-based consultations.

Does a GIA report tell me everything about a diamond?

No. A grading report is an essential tool, but it does not fully capture visual beauty, light performance, craftsmanship, or the subtle differences that become apparent when comparing diamonds in person.

Why can two Fancy Yellow diamonds have similar certificates but look so different?

Color distribution, saturation, cutting style, proportions, fluorescence, and overall visual appearance can all influence how a fancy colored diamond looks, even when grading reports appear similar.

Is a retail jewelry store a bad place to buy a diamond?

Not at all. Many retail jewelers provide excellent service and beautiful jewelry. The important thing is to compare options, ask questions, and make an informed decision.

Final Thoughts

I’ve spent more than 25 years inside New York City’s Diamond District examining diamonds, sourcing stones, designing custom engagement rings, and helping clients understand differences that aren’t obvious on a grading report.

One lesson has remained consistent.

The day you shop can influence who you meet.

And who you meet can influence the diamond you’ll own for the rest of your life.

If you’re considering a natural diamond, a Fancy Yellow diamond, or a custom engagement ring, give yourself every possible advantage before making your decision.

A single weekday appointment may be one of the smartest investments you make during your entire diamond-buying journey.

I rarely write reviews but working with Mike has been a true pleasure! My fiancé and I flew from Austin to meet with him - and we left with the most exquisite engagement ring! His craftsmanship is impeccable and his true passion for what he does is clearly apparent…not to mention how wonderful his client service is! He sized the ring on the spot and made sure that all the documentation (and the ring) made it safely to Texas. We are now having him create the wedding band of my dreams. If you are looking for exceptional artistry, a lovely experience and a collaborative relationship to design your jewelry - look no further than Mike Nekta!

I had a fantastic experience with Mike who helped us choose our diamond. He was informative, passionate, and genuinely wanted us to be happy with our decision. His kindness and positive attitude made the process enjoyable. We don’t live in his area so he went above and beyond by texting us to keep us informed of the whole creation process. Highly recommend him!

I just got my engagement ring through Mike Nekta and I can’t even begin to say how pleased I am! The entire experience has been wonderful from start to finish. First, the uniqueness and quality of the piece itself is outstanding. The pricing was surprisingly good considering all the factors involved. But most especially, Mike’s personal level of interest in pleasing us as his clients- you rarely find that level of personal service anymore! He cared about making my dream come true. He bent over backwards to make my dream ring possible for me! He clearly deals with elites who spend far more but it didn’t matter to him, he cared just as much about my purchase. I really appreciated that. I definitely plan to shop with Mike again!

Mike is the best! I told him exactly the type of Diamond I wanted for my solitaire engagement ring and he helped my fiancé find the best diamond to not only fit his budget but one I would fall in love with! He really listens to what you like and want and really does exceed to help fit those desires in a ring. Definitely will be coming back to him for our wedding bands and all future jewelry purchases!

Surprise my wife with an upgrade for our seven year anniversary, Mike Nekta came through with flying colors! This place will always be my first & last stop! I could’ve easily spent more money but Mike made sure that what I was buying was the right ring not the most expensive and that’s what I love about shopping with him.You can find a jeweler that sells you anything you want to buy but when you find a jeweler that guide you in the right direction and builds trust with the customer then you’re not only have a jeweler you have an emotional connection same as you do a friend.
