Why Buying a Big Diamond Is a Completely Different Game (And Why Most Jewelers Aren’t Trained for It)

Buying a large diamond is not the same as buying a one-carat or a two-carat stone. People think it’s just a bigger version of the same thing, but it’s not. Once you get into serious sizes five carats, eight carats, ten carats, even twenty carats and beyond  the entire process changes. The stakes get higher. The variables matter more. And the mistakes get more expensive.

I didn’t understand this fully until I was deep into my career. When you grow up in a diamond family like mine, you get exposed to big stones early, and you learn to read them the way someone else reads a book. But even then, it takes years before you truly understand what separates a good large stone from an exceptional one.

A lot of jewelers never get that experience. They might sell a big stone once in their career, maybe twice, and that’s it. They’re good at selling engagement rings, they’re good at talking about the four Cs, but the moment you put a serious stone in front of them, you can feel their confidence drop. They don’t know how to evaluate it. They don’t know what makes it special. They rely on the certificate because they haven’t spent enough time handling stones of this size.

Big diamonds require a different eye.

When I’m looking at a large stone, here’s what I pay attention to:

First, presence. This is something you can’t fake. A big diamond should command the room. The size has to match the visual impact. There are stones that measure large but look small because the cut is off or the light performance is weak. There are stones with strong measurements that feel flat. And then there are stones that look bigger than they are because everything in the cut aligns perfectly.

Second, proportion. Once diamonds get into higher carat weights, even small mistakes in the cut become a thousand times more noticeable. A slightly thick girdle suddenly becomes a wall. A tiny amount of depth can turn into a black window. You have to know how to read the shape, the angles, and the light return almost instantly.

Third, movement. Big diamonds should move light through the entire stone, not just the center. You want a stone that “turns on” from edge to edge. If the corners die, if the sides fade, or if the center goes dark when you tilt it, that’s a red flag. This is something only experience teaches. No grading report can tell you this.

Fourth, emotion. This is the part people don’t talk about. A serious diamond should make you feel something. When someone is spending real money — fifty thousand, a hundred thousand, two hundred thousand, sometimes more — the stone has to hit them in the heart. I’ve seen grown men stop mid-sentence when they see the right stone. Their whole expression changes. Their energy shifts. You can tell right away when the stone speaks to them.

A few years back, a client came in looking for a seven-carat stone for a major milestone. He had looked with other jewelers and every option left him confused. Too many numbers. Too many comparisons. Too many opinions. Nothing was clear. The moment I showed him the right stone, the search was over. He didn’t need a second option. He could feel the difference immediately. That’s what happens when you’re guided by someone who has handled these stones thousands of times,

Here’s the truth most people don’t hear: when you buy a big diamond, you’re not just buying a stone. You’re buying the judgment of the person helping you. You’re buying their eye, their experience, their taste, their standards. And if that person has only handled a handful of large stones in their entire career, you’re taking a massive risk without realizing it.

This is why serious buyers come to me. The type of stones I work with, the level of detail I expect, and the standard I was raised with naturally attract people who want something exceptional. I don’t chase clients. The work filters the clients for me. The people who value quality instantly understand what I bring to the table.

Big diamonds are a different world. A world where the smallest mistake becomes a big problem, and the right choice becomes a lifetime story. If you’re stepping into that world, make sure you have someone next to you who actually knows the terrain.

I just banged out a series of six blogs in the same topic. I must say I enjoyed it. I was in the flow but now I feel like my wrist is developing carpal tunnel is acting up . Probably shouldn’t have went so hard but I’m glad I could provide some guidance.

I rarely write reviews but working with Mike has been a true pleasure! My fiancé and I flew from Austin to meet with him - and we left with the most exquisite engagement ring! His craftsmanship is impeccable and his true passion for what he does is clearly apparent…not to mention how wonderful his client service is! He sized the ring on the spot and made sure that all the documentation (and the ring) made it safely to Texas. We are now having him create the wedding band of my dreams. If you are looking for exceptional artistry, a lovely experience and a collaborative relationship to design your jewelry - look no further than Mike Nekta!

I had a fantastic experience with Mike who helped us choose our diamond. He was informative, passionate, and genuinely wanted us to be happy with our decision. His kindness and positive attitude made the process enjoyable. We don’t live in his area so he went above and beyond by texting us to keep us informed of the whole creation process. Highly recommend him!

I just got my engagement ring through Mike Nekta and I can’t even begin to say how pleased I am! The entire experience has been wonderful from start to finish. First, the uniqueness and quality of the piece itself is outstanding. The pricing was surprisingly good considering all the factors involved. But most especially, Mike’s personal level of interest in pleasing us as his clients- you rarely find that level of personal service anymore! He cared about making my dream come true. He bent over backwards to make my dream ring possible for me! He clearly deals with elites who spend far more but it didn’t matter to him, he cared just as much about my purchase. I really appreciated that. I definitely plan to shop with Mike again!

Surprise my wife with an upgrade for our seven year anniversary, Mike Nekta came through with flying colors! This place will always be my first & last stop! I could’ve easily spent more money but Mike made sure that what I was buying was the right ring not the most expensive and that’s what I love about shopping with him.You can find a jeweler that sells you anything you want to buy but when you find a jeweler that guide you in the right direction and builds trust with the customer then you’re not only have a jeweler you have an emotional connection same as you do a friend. Thanks Mike!!!
