Gemstone Engagement Rings: A Bold Alternative to Traditional Diamonds

I’ve worked with a lot of couples who come in thinking they want a classic diamond solitaire, and honestly, that’s still a beautiful choice.

But more and more, I’m seeing people ask a different question.

“What if the ring felt more like us?”

That’s where gemstone engagement rings come in. They’re expressive, personal, and often more distinctive than a traditional diamond. In the right hands, a gemstone ring can feel just as timeless, but with a little more soul and intention behind it.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through what makes gemstone engagement rings so compelling, which stones actually hold up to daily wear, how to pick the right setting, and what I personally look for when sourcing and designing them at Mike Nekta New York.

Why Gemstone Engagement Rings Are Having A Moment

A diamond has been marketed as the default for decades, but “default” is not the same as “best” for every couple.

Here’s why gemstones are becoming a serious alternative.

They Feel More Personal

Color is emotional. A gemstone can reflect personality, culture, or a shared story. I’ve helped clients choose stones based on a place they got engaged, a birth month, a family heirloom color, or simply a shade they’ve loved since they were a kid.

When you look down at your hand every day, that meaning matters.

They Can Look More Unique (Even In Classic Designs)

You can put a sapphire into a clean solitaire and it still reads timeless, but it will not look like everyone else’s ring. Even subtle shifts, like an icy teal sapphire or a warm champagne diamond accent, can make the ring feel quietly different.

You Have More Budget Flexibility

Some gemstones can be significantly more affordable than a comparable diamond, especially if you are open to different sizes, shapes, and tones.

That said, this is not always true. Exceptional sapphires, rubies, and emeralds can get very expensive very quickly. The difference is that you can often redirect budget toward what you actually care about, like craftsmanship, a custom setting, or a standout center stone that is not “priced by the carat” in the same way a diamond is.

The Most Durable Gemstones For Everyday Wear

If you’re choosing a gemstone for an engagement ring, durability is not optional. This ring is going to be worn daily, knocked against countertops, exposed to soap, and caught on sweaters.

A quick rule I use with clients: prioritize hardness, toughness, and stability, not just beauty.

Here are the stones I’m most comfortable recommending for daily wear.

Sapphire (Including Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green, And Teal)

Sapphire is the best all around choice for most people. It’s a 9 on the Mohs scale (diamond is 10), it wears beautifully, and it comes in a huge range of colors.

Blue is classic, but my clients in New York have been loving teal and parti sapphires because they feel modern and one of a kind.

Who it’s for: Someone who wants color without compromising durability.

Ruby

Ruby is also a 9 on the Mohs scale because it is the same mineral as sapphire (corundum), just red. A fine ruby is rare, bold, and timeless.

Who it’s for: Someone who wants a statement stone with heritage and strength.

Spinel

Spinel is an underrated favorite of mine. It is durable (around 8 on Mohs), comes in stunning colors (including vivid reds, purples, and steel blues), and often offers great value compared to sapphire and ruby.

Who it’s for: Someone who wants something uncommon but practical.

Chrysoberyl (Including Alexandrite)

Chrysoberyl is another strong option (8.5 on Mohs). Alexandrite, the color changing variety, can be breathtaking. True fine alexandrite is rare and pricey, but if it’s within your budget, it’s one of the most “wow” stones you can choose.

Who it’s for: Someone who wants rarity and character.

Aquamarine, Morganite, And Tourmaline (With Caution)

These stones are popular, and they can be beautiful, but they are not all equally suited to daily wear.

Aquamarine can do okay with protective settings and realistic expectations. Morganite is softer and can show wear faster. Tourmaline varies by type and can be more prone to chipping depending on the cut.

My honest take: These can work, but you need the right design and a client who understands maintenance. If you want a “wear it hard for decades” ring, sapphire is usually the safer move.

Gemstones That Look Amazing But Are Usually Too Soft For Engagement Rings

I’m not here to tell you “never,” but I am here to protect you from regret.

These stones can scratch, abrade, or chip much more easily:

  • Opal
  • Pearl
  • Tanzanite
  • Fluorite
  • Malachite
  • Lapis lazuli

If you love one of these, I typically suggest using it in earrings, a pendant, or a right hand ring. Or we can design something where the stone is extremely protected and you commit to wearing it more gently.

Natural Vs Lab Grown Gemstones: What Actually Matters

This topic gets emotional fast, so I try to keep it simple and honest.

Natural Gemstones

Natural stones are formed in the earth. They can be rare, and some clients love the idea that their ring is built around something truly geological and one of a kind.

Natural stones often have inclusions and “personality.” Some are heated or treated, which is common and not automatically a negative, but it should be disclosed and understood.

Lab Grown Gemstones

Lab grown gemstones have the same chemical composition as their natural counterparts, but are grown in controlled conditions.

They can be a great choice if you want:

  • a cleaner look
  • a specific color
  • a bigger size for budget
  • a more predictable supply chain

What I tell clients at Mike Nekta New York: choose the stone that aligns with your values, your budget, and your eye. There is no moral trophy here. There is just the ring you will actually love wearing.

How To Choose The Right Gemstone For Your Ring

When clients ask me how to pick the “right” gemstone, I bring it back to four things.

1) Lifestyle

Do you work with your hands? Do you travel a lot? Are you rough on jewelry?

If yes, you want a harder stone and a protective setting. A bezel, a low profile design, or sturdy prongs can make a huge difference.

2) Color Preference (And Color Tolerance)

Some people love bold color and want everyone to notice. Others want a whisper of tone, like a pale icy blue or a grayish green.

Also, consider how color looks in different lighting. A sapphire that looks inky in low light might feel too dark day to day. I like to evaluate stones in multiple environments before final decisions.

3) Shape And Cut

Certain cuts show color better. Some stones look best in:

  • oval
  • cushion
  • emerald cut
  • round
  • pear

I also pay attention to how the stone handles light. A dull gemstone, even if it has a great color, will not give you the life you want in an engagement ring.

4) Setting Compatibility

Some gemstones do better in settings that protect corners and edges. For example:

  • Emerald cut stones have vulnerable corners.
  • Pear shapes have a delicate tip.
  • Any stone with a shallow cut may need a setting that hides a bit of depth or helps it sit safely.

This is where custom design becomes valuable, because you can build the ring around the stone instead of forcing the stone into a standard mounting.

The Best Settings For Gemstone Engagement Rings

A gemstone ring should not be designed like an afterthought. The setting is what makes it wearable for years.

Here are the settings I recommend most.

Bezel Setting

A bezel wraps metal around the stone, protecting the edges. It’s clean, modern, and very secure.

If you want a gemstone ring you do not have to baby, a bezel is often the smartest option.

Halo Setting (Done Tastefully)

A halo can make a center gemstone look larger and brighter, and it offers additional protection.

The key is proportion. I prefer halos that enhance the center stone rather than overpower it.

Three Stone Setting

A colored center stone with two side stones (diamonds or complementary gemstones) can look incredibly balanced and elegant.

This setting also helps if you want more sparkle around a darker gemstone.

Cathedral Or Protective Prong Work

Prongs can be great, but they need to be engineered properly. For daily wear, I look for:

  • strong prongs
  • good coverage of vulnerable edges
  • a height that is flattering but not snaggy

This is craftsmanship, not just style.

Pairing Gemstones With Metals: What Looks Best

Metal choice changes everything.

Yellow Gold

Yellow gold warms up blues and greens beautifully and gives a classic, rich feel.

White Gold Or Platinum

These metals feel crisp and modern. They make cool toned sapphires, spinels, and diamonds look extra icy and clean.

Rose Gold

Rose gold can be romantic with pink stones, and it can also create contrast with blues and greens.

My advice: try combinations in person. Online photos can be misleading, especially with colored stones.

What To Know About Gemstone Treatments (And Why Transparency Matters)

Many gemstones are treated in some way. This is not automatically bad, but it should always be disclosed.

Common examples:

  • Heat treatment: very common for sapphire and ruby to improve clarity and color.
  • Oiling: common for emeralds to reduce the appearance of fractures.
  • Diffusion or filling: can significantly affect value and durability, and should be evaluated carefully.

When I source stones, I focus on transparency, documentation when appropriate, and making sure the client understands what they are buying. A ring should feel exciting, not confusing.

Gemstone Engagement Rings And Long Term Maintenance

If you want your gemstone ring to look amazing for decades, plan for basic upkeep.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • Take the ring off for heavy lifting, gym work, and harsh chemicals.
  • Clean it gently at home with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush.
  • Get prongs and settings checked periodically, especially if you wear it every day.
  • For softer gemstones, accept that you may need re polishing or eventual replacement depending on the stone.

A well made gemstone ring can absolutely be an everyday ring. It just needs to be designed correctly from day one.

My Take: What Makes A Gemstone Ring Feel Truly Luxurious

“Luxury” is not just about price. I see luxury as the combination of design, materials, and restraint.

A gemstone ring feels truly elevated when:

  • the stone is chosen for beauty, not just carat size
  • the setting is crafted with intention and clean proportions
  • the ring sits comfortably and securely
  • the details are finished properly, especially under the stone and along the gallery
  • the ring looks good in real life lighting, not just in a showroom spotlight

That’s the standard I aim for at Mike Nekta New York, whether we are working with a classic blue sapphire or something more unusual.

Nekta New York

I rarely write reviews but working with Mike has been a true pleasure! My fiancé and I flew from Austin to meet with him - and we left with the most exquisite engagement ring! His craftsmanship is impeccable and his true passion for what he does is clearly apparent…not to mention how wonderful his client service is! He sized the ring on the spot and made sure that all the documentation (and the ring) made it safely to Texas. We are now having him create the wedding band of my dreams. If you are looking for exceptional artistry, a lovely experience and a collaborative relationship to design your jewelry - look no further than Mike Nekta!

I had a fantastic experience with Mike who helped us choose our diamond. He was informative, passionate, and genuinely wanted us to be happy with our decision. His kindness and positive attitude made the process enjoyable. We don’t live in his area so he went above and beyond by texting us to keep us informed of the whole creation process. Highly recommend him!

I just got my engagement ring through Mike Nekta and I can’t even begin to say how pleased I am! The entire experience has been wonderful from start to finish. First, the uniqueness and quality of the piece itself is outstanding. The pricing was surprisingly good considering all the factors involved. But most especially, Mike’s personal level of interest in pleasing us as his clients- you rarely find that level of personal service anymore! He cared about making my dream come true. He bent over backwards to make my dream ring possible for me! He clearly deals with elites who spend far more but it didn’t matter to him, he cared just as much about my purchase. I really appreciated that. I definitely plan to shop with Mike again!

He really listens to what you like and want and really does exceed to help fit those desires in a ring. Definitely will be coming back to him for our wedding bands and all future jewelry purchases!

Surprise my wife with an upgrade for our seven year anniversary, Mike Nekta came through with flying colors! This place will always be my first & last stop! I could’ve easily spent more money but Mike made sure that what I was buying was the right ring not the most expensive and that’s what I love about shopping with him.You can find a jeweler that sells you anything you want to buy but when you find a jeweler that guide you in the right direction and builds trust with the customer then you’re not only have a jeweler you have an emotional connection same as you do a friend. Thanks Mike!!!
